A fateful encounter [for
wouldbeground]
Edmond's nice dress shoes aren't quite made for an uphill hike on Jagged Pass.
And yet there he is, clad in a nice suit - black slacks and red blazer - and threatening to fall ruinously at almost every step on the steep slopes. The legs of his slacks are ruined, the fine fabric gray with volcanic ash and dirt. His loyal Zangoose, obviously oblivious to the concept of dressing more or less adequately for an occasion, sprints on, several feet ahead of him, considerate enough to turn every few steps to check that his Trainer is safe.
Finally, the barren top of Mount Chimney comes in sight, its rocks a reddish brown. At that, Edmond stops and closes his eyes, breathing deeply while rivulets of tears stream across his cheeks. "Can you feel it, Fang? His energy pulsating at the heart of the mountain... Our God, the almighty Groudon is near!" Producing a fine handkerchief from one of his pockets, he wipes tears, ash and sweat from his face. "He's the only one... who can give me the answers I seek."

Perhaps the chairlift would have been a much better thing to have used. He stands there, looking at the lava from where he was standing. Constantly needing to wipe his brow when the head got too much for him to bear. The ash continued to bug him... and he was worried he would be plagued for it for life.
And then he heard a voice coming from behind him. Like a surprise, his heart jolted from his chest. He paused for a moment, and stood there quietly. "...Who is there?" Not wanting to turn... a fear of getting more ash in his eyes. "...Tabitha, is that you?" It didn't sound like him but maybe he was hearing things differently right now.

From where Edmond is standing, he can be seen in turn. While he is indeed pleasantly surprised by someone else showing the same affinity with volcanoes and magma, it is not enough to ease Edmond's pain. With desperate fearlessness, he approaches the caldera, ignoring the other man.

"Tabitha!" Rubbing his eyes. "...Who's there?!" When he didn't hear an answer a first time, he had to ask more questions about it. Trying to clear his eyes again.

"The ash must have gotten in your eyes, sir. If, by addressing me with a woman's name, your intention was to compliment me on my attractiveness, I can assure you that I am most definitely not in the mood for flirtatiousness."
no subject
"I can assure you, I was looking for my male second, Tabitha, and not any female. The volcano is currently under use by me. Whatever you have to do can wait."

He stepped away from Maxie, and shifted to stand, very upright and rigid, right in front of him. His dark blue brows furrowed, and a dark rage burned in his red irises. "I am Count Edmond Flamberge. Among other things, I have always been a devout worshiper of Groudon and of this volcano, which he has chosen as his abode!"
Usually, right about at this moment, he would have drawn out his sword and started swinging it around threateningly. But Edmond had left his sword at home, as he realized when he briefly searched for the hilt at his hip.
"And who are you? Who is it that dares stand in my way?"
no subject
"And I am trying to do the same." In his own special way. Not so much exactly how Edmond is doing it, but frankly, he did not care. "I am Maxie. Of Team Magma. And this volcano is under my use! Leave at once or I will be forced to take care of you myself!"
...Not that he really and truly could. He wasn't exactly the strongest man alive, after all. But he would try.

While he did not have his sword, he did, however, have his Zangoose. All Edmond had to do was make a broad gesture with his hand, and in an instant his most trusted Pokémon had put himself between Edmond and Maxie, in a defensive stance.
"My sorrow and desperation drive me forward!" Edmond declaimed with a loud yell. "I cannot be stopped!"

He grabbed his Pokeball, and a Houndoom was thrown out. He stood in front of Maxie and growled loudly at the intruder. Edmond would be sorry for what he was trying to do!
"I will stop you in your tracks! Do not test me!"

Edmond was about to order his Zangoose to attack, when his curiosity was piqued. He was reminded of something his mother had said to him once...
All of Groudon's chosen will accomplish great things in their lives.
And this was one of Groudon's chosen, lingering near a place sacred to Groudon... It was too big of a coincidence, one that deserved stopping and asking.
"What is this... something grand you have in mind, anyway?"
